10 Habits Of Emotionally Intelligent People

Most of the time, our actions are on autopilot. It isn’t until we become aware of what’s been subconscious for years and decide to consciously choose the actions we take in our lives that we can focus, cultivate, and bring forth the aspirations that we have for our lives.

Here are 10 habits that will make your life a little more fulfilling, and in turn, bring you greater success in your health, relationships and passions:

Take full responsibility for your life. Own who you are and the choices that you make—when we play the victim and don’t take ownership for our lives, it is only ourselves who have to deal with the consequences. So take accountability for your life before time takes it away from you.

Prioritize the important things and people in your life. How you spend your time will play a large part in who you become, so opt to spend as much time as you can doing the things that light you up while spending it with the people who bring you up too.

Exercise self-discipline. While we certainly aren’t robots, exercising discipline on the things that are meaningful to you will ripple into every aspect of your life. Doing one small thing each day that leads you closer to your goals makes a world of a difference.

Hone your craft daily. Doing something every day not only keeps your passion alive for it, but it also gives you the opportunity to get better at it. Once you get better at something, the craft can become your chosen purpose for being here. This is when the true magic happens in your life.

Build your self-awareness. Hone the skill of self-awareness by not just being aware of yourself but of other people around you. Be mindful of how you show up every day for yourself and for others.

Respond to situations, don’t react. There’s no doubt that with the inevitable ups and downs of life, you will be forced to either react or respond. Reacting is a subconscious habit towards a situation, but responding is a conscious choice to be mindful of your emotions and how they can rummage through your life. Choose to respond mindfully to things that don’t go your way.

Value alone time. We distract ourselves from being fully alone because of the anxiety we feel from it. Instead, don’t be afraid to sit with that feeling—let it marinate and then become aware of why you’re feeling a certain way. We can only truly listen to ourselves when we allow ourselves to get quiet.

Follow through on what you’re going to do. It’s easy to find an excuse, but it’s challenging to just do the work. Eventually though if you continue persevering, it will start to become a part of your identity—a part of the fabric of who you are. It will become effortless.

Let others know how you feel. Emotionally intelligent people understand that learning how to communicate to others is one of the most important life skills you can have. But even more importantly is being brave enough to communicate how you truly feel within yourself, within your relationships and within all the confines of your life.

Give more. You always receive a reflection of what you put out into the world. Don’t underestimate the power of a small deed for another person… The difference can be life-changing for both of you.
