5 Birth Months Who Still Have Their Childhood Stuffed Animal

There are things you can put in a donation bag without a second thought. Then there's the stuffed animal you still lift by its middle because carrying it by one ear feels rude. For these five birth months, a childhood companion has earned a permanent place, whether it's perched on the bed or tucked safely away.

1. March

March, your stuffed animal has a name, a personality, and possibly a complicated history that you would need a few minutes to explain. You remember which other toys it got along with. You can still see a particular expression on its face when someone sets it down awkwardly. That little creature was one of the first characters in a world you invented, and you remain fond of the person who invented it. Keeping it lets you visit that imagination whenever you like. You might pay your own bills now, but you still turn the bear around so it can see the television.

2. May

The first night in a new place can make you appreciate an old friend, May. Everything is in boxes, the room sounds different, and you haven't figured out which switch turns on the hallway light. Somewhere in your bag is a stuffed animal whose flattened paw fits into your hand exactly as it always has. You kept it because that familiarity continues to feel good. A newer, fluffier version would miss the point entirely. This one has been held into the right shape over years of bedtime stories and ordinary nights. September, at some point you noticed a seam coming loose and went looking for a needle. Throwing away a beloved companion over a small repair wasn't a serious option. You still have it because you've looked after it: found a safe place during a move, rescued it from the bottom of a storage box, tucked the stuffing back where it belongs. Your affection has a practical side. It remembers to be careful. The toy may look a little uneven after your repairs, but you're satisfied that its head is secure again. You don't necessarily introduce visitors to your childhood stuffed animal, November. It might live in a drawer with things you would hate to lose, far from the version of yourself you bring to work or parties. This companion knew you when you cried freely, needed a light left on, and hadn't learned to make a joke out of being hurt. You've kept a place for that younger self, even if you're selective about who gets to meet them. When someone earns your trust, you might finally take the toy out and explain its ridiculous name. If they use that name the next time, you'll remember.
