While emotional intelligence is an important component of a healthy, lasting relationship, being emotionally intelligent can also make the actual dating process itself more difficult, especially today. Here are five reasons why emotionally-intelligent women have a hard time dating today.

  1. She wants a partner, not a project. An emotionally-intelligent woman doesn’t want to have to raise her partner to behave in an adult manner. Rather, an emotionally-intelligent woman wants a partner, not a project. She wants a relationship where she can grow individually as well as in the partnership itself. However, this makes dating more difficult for her because, let’s face it, there are a lot of people out there who aren’t doing the self-work, or who aren’t interested in pursuing personal growth at all. This makes her dating pool that much smaller.
  2. She knows what she wants. An emotionally-intelligent woman has solid self-awareness, meaning she is able to be honest with herself and the people she dates about the type of relationship she’s looking for. While this is not a bad thing by any stretch, it also means that dating today can be more difficult because not everyone in the dating pool is as self-aware as she is. This means they either don’t know what they want, or they think they want the same thing she does only to realize three weeks later that they don’t. It’s exhausting.
  3. An emotionally-intelligent woman has strong boundaries. While this is 100 percent a good thing, it can make dating more difficult because some people aren’t always understanding and can be intimidated by this.
  4. She doesn’t partake in the games today’s dating culture wants her to play. In fact, she refuses to participate. She doesn’t ghost, she doesn’t time her texts, and she doesn’t pretend she’s okay with keeping something casual if she wants something serious. Of course, this doesn’t protect her from getting messed with. People will still ghost her or lie about what they want. As such, it can be hard for her to keep her spirits up. While she has the emotional intelligence to understand that not everyone will treat her this way, she’s still human and it still hurts.
  5. She will never settle because she understands her worth. She won’t put up with bare minimum treatment because she knows she deserves better. She won’t let someone play games with her once she realizes she’s being played. She isn’t afraid to walk away if someone isn’t living up to her standards. This makes dating harder because it also means she may be single longer because not everyone can be the person she needs. But she’s okay with that because she’d rather be alone than be with the wrong person.
