6 Concrete Signs That Your Relationship Isn’t Emotionally Fulfilling You

Just because you love someone doesn’t mean they’re fulfilling you, physically or emotionally. It doesn’t mean that they’re the perfect fit for you. Here are some concrete signs that your relationship isn’t emotionally fulfilling you:

You feel like you can’t talk to them about what’s been bothering you.

Communication is key in any healthy relationship. Everyone is going to have problems with their person from time to time, but the difference is whether you’re willing and able to talk about it in a constructive manner. If you aren’t even comfortable telling your person what’s wrong, then it’s never going to get fixed. You’re never going to feel fulfilled. Whether you’re keeping secrets because you feel like they aren’t going to take your emotions seriously or because you simply don’t feel comfortable opening up to them, this is a major problem.

You feel like they’re getting the better deal in the relationship and are slowly growing to resent them.

Relationships are supposed to feel equal. You’re supposed to be receiving as much as you’re giving. If you feel like you’re the only one trying in the relationship, like your partner is getting everything they’ve ever dreamed about while you’re consistently left unsatisfied, then you’re headed for trouble. You can’t be in a relationship where you feel like only one person’s needs are being met. It’s not fair — and it’s not sustainable.

You’ve been lowering your standards and minimizing your needs.

You shouldn’t have to change in order to please your partner. The right person will rise to your standards. They will be happy to help you out in whatever way you need. If you’ve been pretending you’re happy with what you’ve been getting instead of being honest about your wants, needs, and desires, then you’re doing both of you a disservice.

You always feel like something is missing, even on your best days.

Even though you care deeply about this person, you aren’t able to connect with them in the way you want. Maybe you feel like conversations are one-sided. Or maybe you feel like they just don’t understand you, no matter how hard you try to get them to see your point of view. Either way, you don’t feel close emotionally even when you’re close physically. There’s always some sort of distance between you two.

You’ve been trying to get your relationship needs filled outside of the relationship.

One person can’t be everything for you. That’s why it’s so important to have strong friendships outside of the relationship. However, if you’ve made a commitment to this person, you shouldn’t be looking for love outside of the relationship. You shouldn’t be telling others all about your accomplishments and complaints while leaving your person entirely in the dark. You shouldn’t be treating your own person like a stranger while confiding in everyone else around you.

You keep thinking about leaving.

If you’ve been daydreaming about what it would be like without them, it could be a sign you’re ready to leave. You’re ready to find someone new who will fulfill you emotionally, and not leave you feeling so alone.
