3 Birth Months Who Will Surprise Everyone This Fall
People can get very attached to the version of you they already know. Then one autumn, you do the thing you've been quietly working toward, or someone catches you smiling at your phone, and suddenly they have a few questions. For these three birth months, this fall is an invitation to let a little more of yourself be seen.
1. September
You know quite a lot about everyone else's dreams, September. Your friends might struggle to name yours. You're so good at asking the next question, remembering the important date, and making someone feel interesting that a whole evening can pass without you mentioning what you've been working on. Meanwhile, there's something taking up more and more space in your thoughts. A story. A song. Something you'd be eager to celebrate if a friend had made it.
This fall, give it your name. Perhaps that means putting yourself down for an October open mic, then telling your friends where to be before you can talk yourself out of it. You may be surprised by how eagerly they rearrange their evening. They're used to looking out from the stage and finding you in the audience; let them experience it the other way around. The loveliest surprise could come afterward, when someone asks how long you've been doing this and you finally give the long answer. There is so much of you they still get to meet.
2. January
January, your friends know that look. You've checked your phone twice, barely touched your coffee, and somehow found a way to mention the same person in three unrelated conversations. For someone who usually keeps their feelings tucked away, you're becoming wonderfully easy to read. This fall could find you choosing the long walk home because it means another twenty minutes together, or discovering that a rainy Sunday is an excellent reason to invite someone over and make breakfast very late.
Being visibly fond of someone can feel more exposing than admitting you've had a hard day. It gives people a glimpse of what you're hoping for. But when affection is being returned, you can let yourself enjoy it without rehearsing how you'll pretend it never mattered. Reach for their hand first. Tell your friends you're excited to see where this goes. Someone who has been wondering how much they mean to you might finally get to hear it, in your own voice, while you're still holding their hand.
3. June
June, the surprise might be your answer when someone asks who you're going with. "Just me." Perhaps there's a little town you've wanted to see in autumn, somewhere with a secondhand bookshop and a place to sit by the water. Usually, you float the idea, compare calendars, and let it quietly disappear when nobody can agree on a weekend. This time, you could choose a Saturday and go. Imagine how lovely it would feel to linger somewhere simply because you wanted to.
You can love your people and still be curious about who you are on an afternoon nobody else has helped arrange. There might be a little nervousness at first, followed by the pleasure of realizing you're having a wonderful time. When you get home, you'll have somewhere new to tell your friends about. And if they'd like to come next time, they can ask when you're going.
