4 Birth Months Who Are Still Someone’s Biggest “What If?”
Some people become memories. Others become questions. They are the person someone thinks about when a song comes on years later, when another relationship ends, or when life finally gives them the maturity they did not have when the two of you knew each other. Being someone’s “what if?” does not always mean the relationship was supposed to last. It can simply mean you mattered at a time when they were not ready to understand how much. For these four birth months, there is a good chance someone from your past still wonders what their life might have looked like if they had chosen differently.
February
They wonder what would have happened if they had understood you better.
You are not easy to forget because you are not easy to replicate. Someone from your past may have mistaken your independence for a lack of attachment, or assumed there would always be more time to figure you out. Only after losing access to you did they understand how rare it was to be loved by someone who could give them closeness without trying to control them. They have met other people since you. They may have even loved other people since you. But part of them still wonders whether things would have been different if they had known then how to meet you where you were.
April
They wonder what would have happened if they had been brave enough to choose you.
Someone wanted you and still let fear make the decision. The timing was complicated, the feelings were bigger than they expected, or choosing you would have required them to change something about the life they were already living. So they hesitated. You eventually stopped waiting. What stays with them is knowing that the opportunity was real. You were there. The connection existed. They simply did not have the courage to follow it when they had the chance. You may remember the relationship for how uncertain it felt. They remember it as the moment they should have been more certain.
July
They wonder whether anyone will ever love them the way you did.
You remember people deeply. You learn what makes them feel safe, notice when something is wrong before they say it, and care about the details other people overlook. Someone from your past did not fully understand the value of being loved that way until they experienced relationships without it. What they miss is not simply you. They miss how life felt around you. Being remembered. Being considered. Having someone who knew what they meant even when they struggled to say it. They may never tell you this, but you became a standard they did not realize they were going to carry into every relationship after you.
November
They wonder what would have happened if the timing had been different.
Your “what if?” is the relationship that never got enough room to become what it might have been. The connection was real, but life around it was complicated. One of you was healing, unavailable, leaving, becoming someone new, or simply incapable of giving the relationship what it needed at the time. That is precisely why it has been difficult for someone to put you completely in the past. Nothing happened that definitively proved the two of you could never have worked. Life simply moved before you got to find out. Somewhere in the back of their mind, the unfinished version still exists: you, them, different timing, and the life you might have had if you had met each other a little later.
