A Harvest Moon Ritual for Money, Love, Protection, and New Beginnings
The Harvest Moon has traditionally been associated with gathering, abundance, gratitude, and preparing for the season ahead. Spiritually, it is a beautiful moon for taking inventory of your life: deciding what you want to keep growing, what you are ready to leave behind, and what you want to call toward you next. You do not need an elaborate altar or a collection of expensive tools to work with it. Choose the ritual below that matches what you need most right now, or move through all four if you want to set intentions for the season ahead.
For Money: The Abundance Bowl
You’ll need: A small bowl, a few coins, cinnamon, a bay leaf, and a piece of paper.
Write the amount of money, opportunity, or financial feeling you want to welcome into your life. Be specific, but leave room for it to arrive differently than you expect. Fold the paper toward yourself and place it in the bowl. Add the coins, a bay leaf, and a small pinch of cinnamon. As you add each piece, think about what abundance would actually change for you: less anxiety, more freedom, the ability to travel, paying something off, supporting the people you love.
Leave the bowl somewhere safe overnight. The next morning, keep the coins somewhere you regularly see them and let them become a reminder to make choices that support the financial life you asked for.
For Love: The Two-Candle Ritual
You’ll need: Two candles, two small pieces of paper, and something meaningful to you that represents love.
On the first piece of paper, write what you are no longer willing to experience in love. Confusion. Inconsistency. Chasing. Feeling alone inside a relationship. Whatever belongs to the old chapter goes here.
On the second, write what you are ready for instead. Do not write a specific person’s name. Write the experience: mutual love, attraction, devotion, honesty, emotional safety, laughter, commitment.
Place the papers beneath separate candles and light them safely. Let the first candle represent what you are releasing and the second what you are welcoming. When you are finished, extinguish the candles rather than leaving them unattended. Tear up the first paper. Keep the second somewhere private until the next Full Moon.
For Protection: The Salt-at-the-Door Ritual
You’ll need: Salt, rosemary, a small bowl, and your front door.
Salt has a long history in folk traditions as a symbol of purification and protection, while rosemary has been used symbolically for cleansing, remembrance, and protection. Mix a little of each in a bowl.
Stand at your doorway and think about what you no longer want following you into this next season: other people’s negativity, old conflict, resentment, fear, or the emotional weight of situations that do not belong to you anymore.
Place the bowl near the inside of your door overnight, somewhere children and pets cannot reach it. In the morning, discard the mixture outside your living space. As you do, imagine the boundary becoming clear: what is good for you is welcome; what harms your peace does not get to follow you home.
For New Beginnings: The Harvest Moon Letter
You’ll need: A piece of paper, an envelope, and a pen.
Date the letter one year from now.
Write it from the perspective of the version of you who has already lived through the year ahead. Describe what changed. Where are you waking up? Who is beside you? What stopped hurting? What finally worked out? What did you have the courage to begin? What opportunity arrived that you could not have predicted tonight?
Do not turn it into a list of achievements. Write about how your life feels. Write about the ordinary morning you are living, the people you can call, the peace you have, the things you are excited about.
When you finish, fold the letter toward yourself and seal it. Write “Open under the Harvest Moon” on the envelope and put it somewhere safe until next year.
The most important part of any Harvest Moon ritual is what happens after it. Magic works alongside participation. If you ask for love, become less available for relationships that cannot give it. If you ask for abundance, take the opportunity when it appears. If you ask for protection, honor the boundaries you set. If you ask for a new beginning, be willing to make a different choice when life gives you the chance.
Set the intention under the moon, and then meet it halfway.
