I Think We’re Growing Up Now

I eat watermelon and wear nothing but an old white t-shirt,ย
and write about the people Iโ€™ve grown out of.ย
I donโ€™t usually remember my Friday nightsย
But I love it when I do.ย

Thereโ€™s a pair of last nightโ€™s heels beside my bed,ย
And a thank you note inside of a bouquet.ย

I think weโ€™re growing up now.ย

I used to wear glasses and wear a tiny jar of fairy dust around my neck
I didnโ€™t know what I wanted to be when I was olderย
But I knew I wanted to be something.ย

And now you would give anything just to feel something.ย

He brings me breakfast and I start to cryย
And I wonder why people save the best parts of themselves for someone elseย

I used to think that I gave away my power when we first met
And to think that August was when you stopped existing in the margins
But youโ€™re still one of my favorite adventures to revisit.ย

This is a Sunday in Augustย
And I think Iโ€™m just melancholic about the days that were promised to us.ย

Iโ€™ve realized everyone likes to talk, without saying anything in particular.
And I swore I would never tell you about the tattoo.ย
But when he told me that we were all misunderstood,ย
Iโ€™d cover myself in a rose garden if I could.ย

I think I give away my power to Augustย
More easily than Iโ€™ve ever given anything to anyone elseย
There are so many things that I wantย
And I think August might love meย

Every Sunday in August feels the longest,ย
And the end of every summer is never what it was promised to be
But it always leaves me missing something.
