A Letter From Your Future Self, Based on Your Birth Month
Imagine meeting yourself ten years from now. They know which things worked out, which worries never happened, which heartbreaks eventually stopped hurting, and which decisions changed the direction of your life. They know the names of people you have not met yet and the places you will one day call home. Most importantly, they know how much of what consumes you today eventually becomes a small part of a much bigger story. If your future self could send you a letter right now, this is what they might want you to know.
January
You do not have to earn the right to enjoy your life.
I know you think everything will feel better once you get a little further ahead. Once the work is done. Once there is more money saved. Once everyone you love is okay. I wish you could see how many of the days you are rushing through are the days I miss now. Take the trip before every detail is perfectly arranged. Stay at dinner longer. Stop feeling guilty when you are not being useful. You become successful, but not in the way you currently imagine. The achievement I am proudest of is that eventually, you learn how to have a life outside of everything you accomplish. Please start learning that sooner. The people who love you do not need you to carry everything. They need you here.
February
The people you have to shrink around do not come with you.
I know that sounds frightening right now. You still worry that being fully yourself will cost you belonging, so you occasionally soften an opinion, explain a choice, or make yourself easier to understand. Stop. The life I am living is filled with people who love the parts of you that once made you wonder whether you were too different. You find friends who make you stranger in the best way. You find work that needs the way your mind works. You stop asking rooms for permission to belong in them. Some people leave when you become more yourself, and I promise you will eventually understand why that was necessary. Keep choosing the life that feels true, even when it makes you harder for the wrong people to understand.
March
Please stop believing that every person you love is supposed to stay.
Some of them are going to break your heart. A few will disappoint you in ways you cannot currently imagine, and for a while you will wonder whether loving deeply is worth what it costs you. It is. I need you to know that your heart survives all of it without becoming hard. You learn boundaries. You stop confusing empathy with responsibility. You meet people who do not require you to suffer in order to prove that you care. And yes, you are loved in the way you hoped you would be. The beautiful part is that by the time it arrives, you no longer need someone else to convince you that you are worth choosing. Keep your softness. Just become more careful about where you place it.
April
Do the thing you keep telling yourself you can do later.
Later becomes much more complicated than you think. Life fills up. People need you. Circumstances change. Some opportunities really do have a season. I am not telling you to blow up your life every time you feel restless. I am telling you that you already know which desire keeps returning because it matters. Go there. Apply. Ask. Leave if you know you are finished. Tell the person. Start the thing before you feel qualified. You will make mistakes, and almost none of them will matter as much as you currently fear. The decisions I still think about are the ones where you were brave enough to discover what would happen. Give me more of those memories.
May
You already have some of the things you think you are still working toward.
I wish you could see your life from where I am standing. That home you complain about contains memories you will miss. The people sitting around your table will not always be available on the same Saturday night. Your body deserves appreciation now, not once it looks exactly how you want it to. Keep building the future, but please stop treating the present like the waiting room for it. Buy the flowers. Use the beautiful things. Take photographs of ordinary days. Cook slowly. Let yourself spend an afternoon doing absolutely nothing useful. You eventually understand that wealth is not only having more. It is having enough time and presence to recognize when something good is already yours.
June
You are allowed to change your mind as many times as it takes to find your life.
You worry that changing direction makes you inconsistent. It doesn’t. Some of the best things that happen to us begin with curiosity about something that had nothing to do with the original plan. You meet someone because you go somewhere at the last minute. You discover work you love because you follow an interest that initially seems impractical. You end up caring deeply about things you do not even know exist yet. Please do not lock yourself into a future simply because you once told everyone it was what you wanted. Keep learning. Keep asking questions. Keep being willing to become a beginner. Your life gets much more interesting than the one you are currently trying so hard to predict.
July
Let people take care of you too.
I know how uncomfortable that sentence makes you. You are used to being the person who remembers, checks in, makes the plans, notices the change in someone’s voice, and makes sure everybody gets home safely. You think love is something you demonstrate through how much you are willing to carry. Eventually, you learn that being loved means letting someone notice you before you ask. You find people who remember your important dates, bring you food when you are tired, call because they were thinking about you, and make room for your feelings without immediately handing you theirs. Do not chase people who only love how well you love them. The life ahead contains relationships where you get to rest too.
August
Please stop waiting until you feel completely confident to let yourself be seen.
You think everyone else can tell when you are unsure of yourself. They cannot. Most people are far too occupied with their own insecurities to examine yours. Make the thing. Wear the outfit. Share the idea. Apply for the opportunity that feels slightly too big. Let yourself care visibly. You lose so much less by being seen trying than you imagine. Years from now, nobody remembers the awkward beginning as vividly as you do. They remember what you eventually built. I wish you could borrow my perspective for one afternoon because you would understand how little embarrassment matters compared with the regret of hiding something you were capable of becoming.
September
Nothing terrible happens when you stop trying to perfect everything.
I know you believe being hard on yourself keeps your life from falling apart. You think the constant editing, planning, checking, and improving are the reasons things work. Some of it helps. A lot of it simply makes beautiful experiences harder to enjoy. You eventually become much kinder to yourself, and strangely enough, your life does not collapse. You still accomplish things. You still care. You simply stop treating every mistake like evidence against your worth. Please keep more photographs, even when you dislike how you look in them. Celebrate before identifying what could have gone better. Let people come over when the house is messy. You are living days right now that I would love to have back exactly as they were.
October
Stop working so hard to preserve relationships that only exist because you keep preserving them.
I know you can see every side of the story. You understand why someone is distant, why they cannot give more, why the timing is difficult, why they behave the way they do. Understanding people is a beautiful quality, but it will exhaust you if you keep using it to explain away what hurts. The people in my life now do not require this much interpretation. They call. They come. They ask. They apologize. They make room. You eventually learn that peace is not created by avoiding every difficult conversation. It comes from knowing you can tell the truth and still be loved afterward. Choose people who make reciprocity feel ordinary.
November
What happened to you does not get the rest of your life.
I know some experiences still feel enormous from where you are standing. You think about what you should have noticed, what you should have said, how differently everything might have gone. I remember that version of us very well. I also know how little space those memories occupy here. You do not forget them. They simply stop being the most interesting thing about you. New people know you without knowing that story first. You laugh in places you once could not imagine reaching. You become excited about things that have nothing to do with healing. Please stop worrying that moving forward means what happened did not matter. It mattered. It just was never supposed to matter forever.
December
Your life gets bigger than the one you are currently imagining.
I wish I could tell you where we end up, but that would ruin some of the best parts. You go places you have never heard of yet. You become close to people whose names currently mean nothing to you. A few plans you are absolutely certain about do not happen, and thank God. Other things arrive that you never would have been clever enough to plan. Keep saying yes to the experiences that make your world larger. Do not confuse stability with staying exactly the same. You are going to have several lives inside this one, and you are allowed to love each of them while you are there. The future is not asking you to figure it out. It is asking you to keep walking toward it.
