Sorry, But These 12 Things Don’t Mean She’s Flirting With You

โ€œIf I twirl my hair itโ€™s not because Iโ€™m flirting, itโ€™s because Iโ€™m nervous about something or Iโ€™m bored and my hair is soft.โ€ โ€” donatos_box

โ€œLAUGHING. Just laughing. Itโ€™s very easy to make me laugh, so this becomes an issue for me quite often. Iโ€™m very blunt and open about whether or not I have feelings for someone, but clearly Iโ€™m lying if I laugh at their jokes. If I like everyone that makes me laugh, I must be into all of my friends, my family, my pets, other cute animals, and funny posts on the internet, too. Itโ€™s a weird kink. Thereโ€™s another part to this, too, because a lot of women have a tendency to โ€˜nervous laughโ€™ in an awkward situation with a guy. Unable to pick up on her body language, or even her words given the laughter, many guys think this is a green light. Laughter =/= flirting. Take the compliment that she likes your joke and leave it at that. (And yes, I know that some laughter IS flirting, but itโ€™s better to go in without that assumption. You have no idea how many times Iโ€™ve had guys that I flat out told I wasnโ€™t interested in later accuse me of leading them on because I kept โ€˜flirtingโ€™ with them.)โ€œ โ€” queen_of_the_moths

โ€œLooking pretty (dressing nice, doing my makeup etc) and being nice. I dress up for myself, not you. I am nice because thatโ€™s what decent human beings do.โ€ โ€” middlescore-

โ€œEye contact. Sometimes I am just focused on the conversation.โ€ โ€” CStarling4

โ€œBeing friendly while Iโ€™m at work and having a conversation. Iโ€™m literally paid to make my store inviting and entice you to choose my business over another, and I donโ€™t mind having a chat. But that doesnโ€™t mean Iโ€™m into you, at all. I do genuinely care about what Iโ€™m talking to you about because I am generally open to meeting new people, but my interest isnโ€™t solely directed at you. Almost all my customers, male, female, young, old, get the same treatment.โ€ โ€” 2k_0h_VI

โ€œSmiling and being friendly. So many guys (and women, too, now that I think about it) ask you out for this, thinking itโ€™s a signal. Itโ€™s kind of them, and most of them are ok if you thank them really nicely and say no thanks, but Iโ€™ve had a number of guys be like, โ€˜Well why were you so nice to me then?!โ€™ Like, would you like me to be rude? I donโ€™t understand.โ€ โ€” ThriftShopKnickers

โ€œFormer Marylander here. Growing up there, I always heard teens and women call everyone โ€˜hon.โ€™ It was not romantic in any way. It sometimes could be said as, โ€˜Thanks for bagging my groceries, hon!โ€™ or maybe a, โ€˜Thatโ€™s nice, hon.โ€™ It wouldnโ€™t be every guy at school because some of them knew better, but you did have the occasional dude who didnโ€™t know that the girls meant it as a warm greeting or just as a thank you. This would definitely cause a few awkward situations between the two of them until everything was sorted out. I donโ€™t hear that word very often now that Iโ€™m in California, but I did feel sorry for the guys who couldnโ€™t figure it out.โ€ โ€” [deleted]

โ€œI always notice a fresh haircut on a guy and I will usually comment on it, โ€˜nice haircut.โ€™ Men are commonly surprised that I noticed and seem to be flattered. I donโ€™t do it to flirt; I just think guys deserve to feel noticed sometimes, too.โ€ โ€” CertifiedBonefied

โ€œHumor. Iโ€™m a goofy ass person. An employee of mine and I would always lightheartedly roast each other and make funny (professional) jokes. Next thing you know started a rumor around the store that I hit on himโ€ฆ Iโ€™ve been with my spouse for ten years.โ€ โ€” number5withcheese

โ€œOpening the door for them. I have a guy at my school who I used to open the door for all the time because he always said that his wrists were hurt. Then he tried to kiss me and I freaked out. He said I was โ€˜coming onto himโ€™. Interesting.โ€ โ€” toomanycults

โ€œCompliments. Recently I was introduced to someone at a party and said, โ€˜Hey! I like your shirt! That print is really cool.โ€™ (It had roller skating dinosaurs on it). He thanked me and then proceeded to get introduced to other people. Went to get myself a drink and he walked up to me and said someone just told him I was married. I told him I was and he goes, โ€˜Then maybe lead with that,โ€™ and accused me of leading him on. Devastated to see such a cool shirt go to waste on such a douche.โ€ โ€” [deleted]

โ€œExisting. Existing gets misinterpreted as flirting. Standing in line at Taco Bell. Standing next to someone at a bar to order a drink. Entering into a room and accidentally making eye contact while looking around. Saying โ€˜bless youโ€™ when someone sneezes, picking up a dropped item, or holding a door.โ€ โ€” gore_schach
