15. 2001: A Space Odyssey

2001: a space odyssey

this movie was made in 1968 (even before the moon landings) and it still amazes me when I watch it to this day. the scenes in space look genuinely insane, plus it’s a Stanley Kubrick movie so it’s already incredible in its own unique way..one of the best movies in history.

17. Rocky Horror Picture Show

Yeah, but you have to see it at a midnight showing at a theater. Seeing it on video is a vastly different experience.

I have seen it in a theater in three countries. In Paris, my traveling companions and I were the only ones who knew what to say and the floor cast took us out for drinks after. I was 17. The guy who played Riff Raff let me call American on his tiny flip-phone, which blew my mind. It was the first time I ever used a cell phone.

The other crazy thing is that I woke up in Wisconsin that morning and even went to school that day before being driven to O’Hare, getting bumped to First Class due to overbooking (Amazing!), flying to Paris, seeing Rocky Horror, and then going out after the show. Long but awesome day.

18. Adventures in Babysitting

Adventures in Babysitting is one of my favorites. It’s 35 years old this year.

19. The Wizard of Oz

It is tough to rewatch this and enjoy it as much as when I first saw it once you know the backstory about how much abuse Judy Garland went through as a child on the set making this movie. It really casts a dark light on her song “Somewhere over the rainbow” when you realize she was being drugged and physically (and supposedly sexually abused) and hoping somewhere out there she could have a better life.

Then again in her later years she also hated being pitied and cast as a tragic figure, so she probably would want you to ignore all that backstage abuse and enjoy her achievements.

20. Two Breakfast Movies

The Breakfast Club, 100%. Jesus Christ. One of the best films ever and I don’t know why. Update: I also love Breakfast at Tiffany’s, but idk if it counts if you’ve only seen the movie once?
