19 Fans Share The Scariest Sounds In Horror History
While special effects do a great job of upping the creep-factor when it comes to horror movies, sometimes it’s just a simple noise that can really do you in. A well-placed scream or crunching noise will haunt your dreams if done right. Recently, horror fans compiled some of the scariest sounds they’ve heard in horror movies, and they’re iconic. Listen at your own risk.
The Hereditary tongue click
I rewatched Hereditary recently and realized how effective the tongue click is in scaring the absolute shit out of me.

The Day of the Dead scream
Dude I think it’s from Day of the Dead but the kill where someone gets his head ripped off by zombies and his scream gets higher pitched the more they pull his vocal chords apart. That scream haunted me.

The tripods in The War of the Worlds
The tripods trumpeting bass notes from The War of the Worlds. Saw that movie in the theater when it came out. The noise still evokes a sense of dread when I hear it.

The sounds in The Haunted
Ok mines quite out there. It comes from a made for TV movie called The Haunted back in 1991.
“When the Smurl family moves into a duplex, they find out its haunted.”
There is a few scenes in this movie that the sound design just freaked me out (cellar scene) however one that always stayed with me was the pillow.
In the scene the mother begins hearing whispers inside her pillow, she tries to get her husband to listen but at first, he hears nothing. Then when he tries one last time the whispers become louder and he freaks out and throws the pillow.
I don’t know why it’s stuck with me, but when ever to lay down to sleep it will often intrusively penetrate my sleepy head.

The Laura Palmer scream in Twin Peaks. Literally the most blood curdling scream in horror.

Silent Hill’s sirens
I submit the air sirens in Silent Hill.

The VVitch’s baby
The baby mashing from The VVitch is gross, especially on rewatch where you know what it is the whole time.

Suspiria’s dance scene
Suspiria remake during the dance scene. The bone and tendons being twisted and broken had a satisfying fleshy crunch to them.

The mermaid in The Lighthouse
The mermaid screech from The Lighthouse always gives me the absolute chills.

The mallet attack in Texas Chain Saw Massacre
The sound in TCM was terrifying, but y’all are missing the best one. The crunch when Leatherface hits that dude with the mallet and the scrabbling sound of his convulsions are the most effective use of sound in any horror movie ever.
