The Last Time Earth Absorbed This Much Carbon, the Shade Took 100,000 Years to Come Back

The same carbon that grows a forest can be the thing that kills it. For nearly two decades satellites watched the planet get greener as carbon dioxide rose, and then around the year 2000 that greening reversed across most of the world’s vegetated land.
Fifty-six million years ago, the last time the earth absorbed a huge dose of carbon, the same turn happened in what is now Wyoming. Dense forest, several layers of leaves deep, thinned into low trees standing far apart. Heat pushed past 104°F in summer, the soil dried and reddened, and the canopy fell by more than a third.
This is the shape of the lesson: growth has a ceiling, and the ceiling is not generosity. Extra carbon feeds a tree right up until the heat and drought that come with it start killing trees faster than any feeding can save them. The densest forest in the whole record stands just before the crash, the big trees that had built the most canopy with the most to lose.
And recovery runs on a clock that isn’t ours. The canopy took well over 100,000 years to begin coming back, and tens of thousands more to fully return.
You will not always be able to undo a thing in the season you broke it. Some damage keeps a longer calendar than a lifetime, and the honest response to that isn’t despair. It’s care, made early, while the shade still holds.
