3 Zodiacs Who Are Total Loners

The problem with being an individual is that you always wind up outnumbered. Although most people are pro-social and love to surround themselves with family and friends, not everyone is that way. Some people crave being alone, away from the numbers, somewhere that they can feel at peace with their own thoughts and their own company.

This doesn’t mean that they are sociopathic, hate other people, or wish them harm. In fact, many introverts are quite compassionate and even philanthropic. It’s just that, given the choice, they’d prefer to be alone rather than lost in a crowd.

Although some people are naturally introverted, a minority of natural-born loners take it a step further and almost entirely cut themselves off from all social interaction. Such people are known as “recluses.”

Here are the three most reclusive zodiac signs, as well as three famous people who were known not only for their accomplishments but for their reclusiveness.

1. Pisces

The Fish is widely considered to be one of the most introverted zodiac signs. They veer toward introspection, sensitivity, and creativity. They tend to find public events and large crowds as distractions from the wonderland inside their own heads. Being around others only wakes them up from their bright and colorful daydreams.

Famous Pisces Recluse: Bobby Fischer (born March 9), whom many consider to be the greatest chess player of all time, won the world championship in 1972 and then lost it three years later when he refused to defend it. In later life, he became a “wild-haired, shambling recluse” after becoming prone to conspiratorial thinking. He died in Iceland at age 64.

2. Capricorn

It’s not that Capricorns necessarily hate other people—in many cases, they can be quite friendly and accommodating when they can find the time. But that’s just it—they are so ambitious and goal-oriented that they can hardly ever find the time. Their eyes are fixed firmly on the prize, and being sociable is seen as a distraction keeping them from reaching the finish line. While this may make them seem rude and standoffish to others, they don’t intend to be that way.

Famous Capricorn Recluse: Howard Hughes (born December 24) was a film producer, business titan, and widely feted as one of the world’s richest men. Hughes became known in later life as someone who developed a severe case of OCD and almost completely disappeared from public life. Although he is probably the most famous (and successful) recluse of all time, he was also one of the world’s most generous philanthropists.

3. Cancer

Cancers are extremely emotional, which leads them to being intensely vulnerable to criticism, which means they get easily hurt, bear a grudge, and tend to withdraw rather than engage in battle. Rather than eating at the finest restaurants and hanging out at the hottest clubs, they prefer to withdraw into their own shells and build a comfy-cozy environment for themselves at home surrounded by their favorite things.

Famous Cancer Recluse: Syd Barrett (born January 6) was the founder of legendary rock band Pink Floyd. Barrett named the band and was their original leader, but he only lasted one album before succumbing to drug-induced schizophrenia and retreating entirely from the public eye in 196
