The Life-Changing Astrological Events Of September 2023
The final months of 2023 are upon us. After a wild summer of retrograding Venus and the emotional intensity of the full blue supermoon in Pisces on the last day of August, we’re starting September off on a slightly steadier note.
As a grand total of six planets will be retrograde over the upcoming months, the colder months in the northern hemisphere will feel a bit like cosmic déjà vu, as we collectively revisit old themes.
What, exactly, is going on in the heavens this September? Consider this month the proverbial calm before the storm. These are the biggest astrological events that will punctuate the next few weeks.
Venus direct in Leo
On September 3rd, the planet of love, pleasure, and beauty finally stationed direct, bringing closure to hardships in the realm of relationships and finances. After this date, you will not only have a clearer sense of what you value and appreciate in your intimate life, you will be less likely to leave the hair salon disappointed or accidentally buy the wrong shade of foundation. Cosmetic mishaps will be a thing of the past as we all begin our Virgo season glow-ups. Not to mention, your mood will likely improve. After a couple weeks of introspection through the solitary summer, you’re likely to feel more creative, inspired, and energized. If you have strong Leo placements in your birth chart, you’re likely to feel this station more intensely, along with your Venus-ruled counterparts, Libra and Taurus.
Jupiter retrograde in Taurus
Unfortunately, the very next day, the planet of expansion and grandiosity turned retrograde, impacting the Jupiter-ruled signs of Pisces and Sagittarius the most intensely, along with those with prominent Taurus placements in their natal chart. Jupiter is typically associated with luck and good fortune, and Taurus rules finances, so it goes without saying that our relationships to money will shift over the next four months. But Jupiter also rules spirituality and your higher calling, so this will be a transformative time in a lot of ways. Your horizons will broaden, your spiritual experiences will heighten, and you may have to backtrack to deal with some slow-moving karma. Jupiter will make a harmonious trine to retrograde Mercury this month, making it likely that bank statements and documents relating to finances will be relevant. Keep track of all of your bills and e-receipts, and make sure you don’t get slammed with any extra hidden fees you missed while scanning the fine print. Interestingly, though New Year’s Eve itself has no astrological significance, Jupiter happens to station direct on December 31st. We’ll all be starting 2024 off with a new and improved perspective on Jupiterian themes: our beliefs, our values, and our soul purposes.
Sun-Mercury cazimi in Virgo
Mercury loves being in its favorite sign of Virgo, even when it’s retrograde. On September 6th, you will be pleasantly surprised to find some good fortune in the area of your chart that is ruled by Virgo, as the sun and Mercury form a rare conjunction known as a cazimi, from the Arabic term “in the heart.” When Mercury enters the heart of the sun at the exact degree, it becomes consumed by the fiery rays and incites very powerful energy in the collective. Mercurial Virgos and Geminis will feel this energy most strongly, but no one is exempt; Mercury is known as the messenger planet, and is almost certainly going to reveal some intel that will serve you as you move forward this month. You know what they say about what happens in the darkness: it always comes to light. This is the time when that will happen, for better or for worse. The inciting incident that occurs during the cazimi often takes about a month or two to unfold, so keep an eye on any important information you receive this fall, either in your waking hours or through your dreams.
New moon in Virgo
On September 14th, the new moon in Virgo arrives, and with it the possibility for many new projects that require heavy reliance on your left brain. Since Mercury stations direct the very next day, this new moon will have a feeling of urgency. Virgos and Geminis will consider this a breath of fresh air after struggling through a lengthy and tedious Mercury retrograde, but everyone is likely to feel a sense of relief around this time as the zeitgeist takes on a more rational, analytical, and organized vibe.
Mercury direct in Virgo
All of us will breathe a sigh of relief after September 15th, but anyone with prominent Virgo or Gemini influence in their charts will be especially grateful for these smoother waters. With the trickster planet finally direct, you will feel much more equipped to handle the projects that require close attention to detail. Just be aware that, with the new moon still coloring this event, you might feel uncharacteristically impulsive or agitated to get moving after so much sluggish action. You might find it noble to take on too much at once, but you’ll just end up tiring yourself out. The best course of action is to slow down and build yourself back up gradually to your usual baseline. Otherwise, you could end up facing serious burnout.
Sun into Libra
On September 23rd, Virgo season comes to its quiet conclusion. After several weeks of hard work disrupted by retrograde inconveniences, you will settle comfortably into the more pleasant energy of Libra season. As always, this is a time to focus on themes related to partnerships, justice, and balance, filtered through the lens of whichever house Libra rules in your personal natal chart. By now, the fall colors will be on full display, inspiring Venusian artistry of all kinds and creating an atmospheric backdrop to the final week of September.
Full moon in Aries
On the 29th of September, the full moon in Aries comes in like a thief in the night to remind us that not everything can be happy and harmonious at all times. Individuality, assertiveness, and action will be highlighted, revealing and heating up emotions that were first stirred up back in Aries season six months ago. If you’ve been keeping any feelings to yourself, don’t be surprised if they erupt out of you in a very dramatic way. Get your aggression out in a constructive way by going for a run or hitting the gym, rather than picking fights with your partner. However, if you’ve been struggling in your relationship for some time, this might be the final breaking point that causes you to actually have a constructive conversation about what is and isn’t working. Aries placements, you’re going to feel this one the most, along with your fellow Martians: Scorpios.
